1883 Joe Hayes, who has but recently returned from a visit to the old homestead, has bought out the stock, and leased the fixtures of the Merchants hotel billiard saloon and bar. He took possession last evening, but on this evening will have his opening. The Deadwood brass band has been engaged, and will make it pleasant and agreeable for Joe's old friends. In addition to the music, there will be a free lunch, to which all are invited. This simple announcment is all that is necessary to bring a big crowd, as Joe's friends are everybody, and they will be on hand to give him a good send off.

1885 The Deadwood Brass Band has kindly consented to play several religious overtures at the new Methodist church.

1888 For the first time in the history of the Black Hills a brass band went to the top of White Rocks Sunday and filled the area for miles around with music. Nelson was on hand to take a half dozen photographs.
