Young mechanic, Charles Tregoning, who has been employed for years in the shops of the Homestake company at Lead, is a natural born inventor. He invented a combination lock, simple and effective, that is highly spoken of by the Scientific American. His latest is an automatic railroad car brake. He has made a model of a car complete, with the brake attached. It is so peculiarly constructed that the bumpers of two cars coming together, sets the brake on each of them, the harder the pressure of the bumpers, the tighter the brakes apply. If the engineer desires to stop, all that is necessary is to slow up his engine until the bumpers meet, and the brakes are all set and closer than can be done in the ordinary way by hand. Another peculiarity that we cannot explain is, when it is necessary to back up a train, the backing up of the engine releases all the brakes, as instantanteously as they were set. It can be applied to any kind of a car, and in no way interferes with the hand brakes. The inventor proposes to put one of them on a wood car, and see how it operates when in actual use. It looks to us, like a good thing. Tregoning, Charles. Homestake Mining Company. Lead. Black Hills Daily Times November 2, 1883, p. 3, col. 5.
Birth. Landguth--To the wife of Charles Landguth, a daughter. The arrival of the heir apparent to the Landguth throne, was on yesterday morning. The father, who runs one of the engines on the Homestake railroad was sent for, and he came wreathed in smiles, and so proud that he bowed to every man he saw on the way. It was after a good deal of persuasion on the part of the company that he was induced to leave the young lady and go back to his engine, but he did so, and now when he whistles down brakes he sings, "Good bye, my baby, good by". Landguth, Charles. Homestaking Mining Company. Black Hills Daily Times November 17, 1883, p. 2, col. 3.
Elizabethtown improvements. This suburb of Deadwood is having a boom on a small scale, not the kind manufactured in the cities on the east of the Missouri river last summer, but a legitimate one, made necessary by the natural growth of business. Harry Damon, to not be behind with his up-gulch neighbors, has started in to have waterworks, and to carry out the project, instead of waiting for the Homestake company, has put them in himself. They are not so extensive as the Croton works in New York city, but sufficient to supply all domestic purposes. Eight hundred and twenty-four feet of wrought iron water pipe has been laid below the frost line, and by next Tuesday night the reservoir, that will contain 380 barrels of water, will be completed and filled, and this amount will be held in reserve all the time for any emergency that may arise. The water is furnished by Spring creek, as pure as there is in the world. Harry Damon has built a big blacksmith shop, wainscoted on the inside and whitewashed on the outside. At a distance it looks like a Mormon temple, without the superabundance of women. Two blacksmiths area at work all the time, and they are kept busy. Who knows but what Elizabethtown, the first city of the belt, may yet be when the railroad comes in, the first city again in wealth and population. One thing is certain, they have a good chance to spread out down there. Damon, Harry. Homestake Mining Company. Elizabethtown. Water Lines. Black Hills Daily Times November 18, 1883, p. 3, col. 4.
